Tom Hanks reveals he has Type 2 Diabetes on Late Night with David Letterman
26 million Americans have Type 2 Diabetes, like Hanks has, accounting for 90-95% of all diagnosed diabetes cases in adults.
And it looks like more are coming. 79 million Americans are pre-diabetic. Shockingly, of the 79 million Americans who are pre-diabetic, only 11% know it.
I was fascinated by a recent story I heard on NPR, “No Bitter Pill: Doctors Prescribe Fruits and Veggies,” about a group of New York doctors who are writing prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables as a way to manage the health of their patients, especially those with diabetes. And they’re getting results: after the first year, 38% dropped their BMI. Why? Because, as one of the participating physicians said, “Just telling patients to eat well is not enough.
